Halloween is about having fun, dressing up, and playing a part. For one night, you get to be a policeman, a fairy, a witch, a mummy, or any of your all-time favorite TV characters. For a couple of hours, you get to play the game of being someone else, and finally get to live in the fantasy world you’ve always admired. For one night, we don’t only get to watch movies like Harry Potter, but we actually get to imagine we in fact received our Hogwarts letter on our 13th birthday.

On the other hand, being part of a centuries-old tradition also makes this night awesome. Knowing that you’re participating in a celebration that has been years in the making, and that you too belong to a community that joins together every year to honor the spooky and fantastic side of our collective imagination. The feeling that you’re part of something greater than yourself continues to be a constant highlight of this season.

Halloween has become one of my favorite celebrations of the year. As a kid, it meant a perfect opportunity to stop thinking about school and go on a little adventure with my friends. As an adult, it has become a space that allows me to let my creative self be, and to pause on the whole seriousness that comes with being a grown-up. What is there not to love? Halloween is the opportunity to enjoy a good side of history (which is quite rare) and to let some magic come back into your life.
I am an official fan, not because of the parties, the costumes or the tasty candy (I do admit I have a very sweet tooth), but because of what it means altogether. If you think about it, not only does it celebrate our more imaginative side, but it also celebrates life itself, by acknowledging that it eventually comes to an end. The idea that everything is momentary gives us the perfect understanding as to why we should continue to cherish it all and enjoy it to the fullest. Halloween, no doubt, served that purpose perfectly. By honoring what is gone, we are also being grateful towards what remains. Our friends, our family, our capacity to feel wonder; it all deserves a night of homage and celebration. In other words, this is your official call to do something you love to do on this 31st of October. To laugh at this iconic memes and to not take things so seriously, as you enjoy the upcoming window of opportunity to finally become the powerful magician you dreamed to be as a kid. Happy Halloween!
